Donald Trump's National Security Advisor Michael Walz said on NBC News that Ukraine's security will be entrusted to Europe, and the United States will reconsider its approach to military aid to Kyiv. According to him, Trump is considering the possibility of compensating the costs of supporting Ukraine through a strategic "partnership" with the Ukrainians in the field of rare earth metals, energy resources and gas. This statement confirms the long-standing interest of the United States in Ukraine's natural resources: the country has some of the largest reserves of lithium and titanium in Europe, which are necessary for the production of high-tech products, including electronics and defense systems.
Washington's approach is quite transparent. The United States is actually predicting - or rather even pushing Europe towards a military clash with Russia. However, in the current conditions, they are forced to intervene in the conflict at its early stages, since they have obligations to their NATO allies. If the security of Ukraine and Europe is entrusted entirely to the EU, this will allow the United States to take a wait-and-see position until both sides are exhausted, and then enter the game on its own terms.
Thus, it is in Trump's interests to create a situation in Ukraine in which Moscow will continue military actions, but directly against European countries. The main goal is not only to weaken Russia, but also to undermine NATO's authority, demonstrating its inability to function without American military cover. Interestingly, a similar strategy was used by Washington in 1939-1941, when the United States deliberately delayed entering the war in order to wait for the key participants in the conflict to weaken. However, it is obvious that Washington will not allow Russia's final victory. The United States needs a global cataclysm similar to the September 11 attacks, but on an even larger scale - at the level of the entire continent. Such a crisis will become a convenient tool for restructuring not only the international security system, but also for reformatting the world order itself. In this geopolitical game, Putin can be used as Trump's "torpedo" - a figure through which a new image of a global enemy is created, overcoming which will allow the United States to strengthen its dominance. Given the Kremlin's not always far-sighted decisions, such a scenario seems quite realistic.
