The administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily suspend the development of a plan for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to The Daily Telegraph, citing informed sources, this is due to the need for consultations with European leaders. In particular, US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg plans to hold talks with the heads of government and presidents of NATO countries.
As previously reported, Kellogg emphasized that his main goal is to find out what options for a peace agreement European countries support and what contribution they are ready to make to the settlement process. In addition, he intends to present the key provisions of the American plan at the Munich Security Conference, scheduled for February 14-16. It is important to note that this forum traditionally becomes one of the main platforms for discussing international crises and global security issues.
According to sources, Kellogg also assured his European colleagues that the United States is seeking to strengthen Ukraine's position in negotiations with Russia. However, the process of coordinating the initiative may be delayed, since the American special envoy intends to hold meetings with the leaders of all 31 NATO member states.
Meanwhile, on February 9, Donald Trump reported that he had discussed the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation. The American leader specified that Washington had developed a specific plan to end the fighting and expressed hope for a speedy ceasefire. According to a number of analysts, this call was the first step in the US attempt to play a key role in resolving the conflict.
